There are six differant ways to read your e-mail from this server!...
Webmail
By far the easiest to set up as all you need is a browser, point it to http://www.dogsbodyhosting.net/webmail/
and login with your standard username & password. Using webmail
means you can access your e-mail no matter where you are as long as you
have access to the internet. You will also notice that this is done securely via SSL.
N.B. If you haven't used webmail before login to webmail and go
to 'Options', 'Personal Information' and complete your 'Full Name' and
'Email Address' (or at least the name and e-mail you would like shown
on your sent e-mails).
IMAP & POP3
I have put these two into one category for while they are very
differant things the setup is much the same and I can show the
comparisons between the two. With POP3, the mail is downloaded from the server and onto your home
computer. There's no synchronizing going on, just copying of mail files
from one place to another. In most POP clients, you can choose to leave
a copy of the mail on the server, or to delete it from the server when
you download it. POP3 is good if you just want to get online, download
your email, and get off line again (such as dial-up connections).
With IMAP your email client is constantly connected to our server,
and doesn't make local copies of your messages. IMAP is great if you
access your email from lots of different machines, since it keeps all
the messages on the server which you can access from many clients. It's
also good if you have a slow connection, because it only downloads the
email headers until you choose to read a whole message. That's great
for deleting spam by just reading the subject line! IMAP needs a
constant connection to the Internet the whole time you're doing your
email.
Webmail is really just a web based IMAP client which means that it
works very well with using IMAP on your home computers as well.
Remember that any mail that you leave on the server as part of POP3
or IMAP comes from your sites disk quota, but that really shouldn't be
a problem either way unless you being e-mailed very big e-mails.
Unfortunately there are way too many e-mail programs for us to tell
you how to set them up but most of them are self explanitary. Select
the protocol you wish to use and use your standard username and
password. If we host your dns then your mail server is mail.example.com otherwise use your website address (e.g. www.example.com)
IMAPS & POP3S
These are the secure versions of IMAP & POP3 that work inexactly the same way as above but are wrapped SSL which means that all communication between you and the server is encrypted.
When configuring your mail client you must select to "Use Secure
Connection" or "Use SSL" but DON'T select "Use Secure Authentication".
The port number that you are connect to should automatically change to
993 for IMAP or 995 for POP3.
APOP
APOP is an "Authenticated POP3" protocol and works in exactly the
same way as POP3 but the login (and not the e-mail itself) is encrypted
over the
internet. To use APOP instaed of POP3 the site andministrator must
login to the site control pannel and select APOP for that username. For
this reason it is more advisable to use POP3S as all communication is
then encrypted and with APOP turned off POP3 & POP3S can be used by differant users at the same time.
